My hands tightened on the wheel as I turned onto Highway 159 toward Red Rock Canyon. It was only a thirty-minute drive from the strip but then was a treacherous hour trek on foot to the wolf clearing.

Soon, I parked my car and took a deep breath, reminding myself I just needed to act like I was mildly interested in this whole event. I needed to stay until the winner was announced, let the winner know I was not interested in them, and then off I went.

I stepped out of my car, and a cool breeze raced across my face, and I closed my eyes, tilted my face to the sky, and let the moon’s rays hit my skin. There was magic in those rays, magic that called to any wolf. Magic that could tame us or rile us up on its whim. It was a full moon tonight, and my wolf was itching to run free, but I kept a lid on it. Father would most definitely not approve if I showed up naked, clothes shredded from the change.

I hiked up the forest-covered trail, following the scent of fur and wildness. I reminded myself these events were not the worst. Sometimes they could be entertaining, especially when the women got vicious.

Othaman was the night that gave the she-wolves all the power. They got to fight over the males they wanted, and the winner was treated like a queen until the next Othaman. Us wolves valued strength in all its forms. While my father valued inner strength, I enjoyed bodily strength. I wanted to see a brutal and bloody fight. It got my blood pumping and the adrenaline in my veins racing. Male or female, it didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered was that the strongest opponent won.

Sometimes it was the one with the best strategy, and sometimes it was the one that got the win from the sheer will to win. No matter which you enjoyed, us wolves knew how to put on a good show and keep you entertained.

I was about halfway up when a blur of a vampire raced past me and up the mountain. What the hell? What was a vampire doing here? Were they here to cause trouble? Then they would learn today that wolves were not the ones to mess with.

A familiar sweet scent was left in its wake, filling up my nostrils, and gave me pause. Was that . . .? I picked up my pace, practically running, because I wanted to confirm if my nose was smelling the real deal and not just making it up because I wanted it to be her.

I heard a few howls, my wolf panting to respond, but my mind was consumed with finding the truth about who that vampire was. I wanted to see her with my own eyes, but why would she be here? This wasn’t Syndicate business; it was strictly wolf tradition.

As soon as I broke through the clearing, all I saw was a large group of wolves and people standing around.
